My friend Lisa Lane Bryant sent this over today. I thought it was so relevant to you I decided to post it here.
Why We Give Up On Secret Dreams & How To Resurrect Them
By Lisa Lane Bryant.
I know you have a secret dream.
It’s in the back of your mind right now.
But, you have not made it a REAL goal. Not yet. That’s the reality of most peoples’situation.
Here’s the problem…
If you don’t know how to take a secret dream and transform it into a REAL goal, then you have little hope of making your dream a reality. Why is it so hard to go from’dreaming’ to commiting to a goal? There are many reasons, but for todayI’ll stick to the most obvious one.
Ready?
You don’t believe you deserve it….for the simple reason that people have discouraged you.
They’ve either discouraged you directly (by putting you down) or indirectly (by ignoring or belittling your dream).
If so, you’ll be unconsciously frightened to commit to your goal.
It openly contradicts what your parents/caregivers wanted for you (or think about you).
If you buy into these messages, your aim in life becomes getting love and approval from everyone — not fulfilling your own desires.
Over time, you become grooved in putting others’ wants and needs first (at the expense of your own).
You’ll say things like, “My job doesn’t matter to me. I’m just going to get a job that pays the bills.”
You then spend eight hours a day doing things you don’t want to do (but you’re making other people happy).
Or, you say things like, “I don’t care which movie we go to,” or “I don’t mind doing more than my share around the house.”
Do not be deceived by the fact that some of these are small things.
If you cannot express yourself aboutsmall things, how will you assert yourself with big things?
The mental toughness principlehere is self-assertiveness.
It’s the idea that YOU matter.
When you’re self-assertive, you’re comfortable expressing your wants and needs appropriately, including turning dreams into goals.
The bottom line? To win, you must lead your life by honouring your desires.
This means moving your secret dream into the category of REAL goal.
Do it.
Do it now.
Get out a pen and a piece of paper and write your goal down.
The goal should answer the question, ‘What do I want?’
The goal can be about love, money, success, or anything else.
Write whatever comes to mind.
Do not criticize or evaluate.
Nothing is too silly or ridiculous, no matter what the people in your life have told you.
