I want to share a story I found today that is just another illustration that pretty much anything is possible.

It’s the story of 2 brothers without any business background who created a $100M per year T-shirt & apparel enterprise beginning literally on the streets of Boston.

Here is a bit of their story as told on their web site:

“1989, Bert and John Jacobs designed their first tee shirt. They knew nothing about the business. For five years, the brothers hawked tee shirts in the streets of Boston and traveled the East Coast, selling door-to-door in college dormitories. ”

And now they are running a $100M per year global enterprise.

Watch these videos and have an amazing, creative, and exciting day.

Have you ever heard the expression “inspect what you expect” before?

It’s an expression you may want to write down and post on your computer screen, on your calendar or leave on your desk because it could cost you tons of moolah if you forget it.

Let me explain why…

Can you see that no matter what business you’re in, ultimately you’re going to have to work with other people to create sustainable success?

I mean let’s face it….nobody can build a business all by themselves…

Well, if you’ve worked with people before, and I assume you have…then you can probably appreciate that this means that there is fertile ground for misinterpretation, misunderstanding or unfortunately even misrepresentation of vitally important information.

I am going to share a story with you right now that illustrates why you are going to want to make “inspecting what you’re
expecting” a part of your daily business discipline.

This goes whether you opt to hire your own employees, retain contract labor, or outsource to a growing network of ‘virtual assistants’.

Once you have delegated a task, it is essential that you monitor the performance of the task to make sure that it is done on schedule and meets the required level of work quality.

Consider this….

Have you ever had your house painted?

If not, then just play along with your imagination for now…

If you hired a painter to paint your house and the guy shows up to do the job without a ladder, a brush or a drop cloth….and you allow him to do the job anyway….should you really expect to get a quality result?

Of course not!

I know it’s a silly illustration….but believe it or not, I see business owners do what is basically the same thing each and every day….

They leave vitally important matters in the hands of employees or contractors and don’t monitor the results.

Remember, delegation is NOT abdication.

As the business owner you are still responsible for the ultimate results of a delegated task.

You must stay on top of it.

I cannot tell you how many times I’ve been tripped up by this one.

I am ashamed to admit that I have had what seems like countless instances in which I’ve neglected this vital success principle.

Some even recently….

And every single time I have, it has cost me…and cost me dearly.

Now, you can probably already tell that I am not very skilled technically.

So you may also be able to appreciate that it can be hard for me to effectively assess a technicians ability to do a job I need done.

I mean, I don’t know what most of these folks are even saying half the time and I don’t understand the rest.

So, while it’s clear that I have to hire contractors to do the technical work I need done, knowing what to expect when I inspect is a big challenge.

Well, the story goes that some years ago I had hired a contractor to do some technical work for me.

The person I hired spoke confidently of his ability to deliver what I needed for this particular project throughout the review process.

He knew what he was talking about.

He was able to complete a test scenario I gave him acceptably.

His references checked out.

So, I hired him.

I provided him the information he needed to get the job done and got him underway.

A day or so later he called me to tell me he had completed work and that the system was ready to go.

As busy as I was at the time and trusting that he knew what he was doing I asked just a few clarifying questions and satisfied with the answers told him to go ahead and launch the system.

I paid his invoice and went on about my business.

Well, everything was churning along just as planned.

Before long I was paying pretty good money to accelerate lead generation and was driving a fair amount of prospective customer traffic to the application he had deployed for me.

Each week at my invitation he would attend my project review meeting and report what sounded like very favorable results for the system.

Everything seemed like it was going along fine.

The numbers were good….I did not see any support tickets related to the system….

All’s well, right? (I wish)

One day, months into the project, I had a little extra time on my hands so I started poking around in the system…..

What I found ……What I found was…..(Uhhhhhhhhh, just recalling this story is making me feel ill….)

What I found was that the system had NOT been built and deployed properly at all!

While the numbers being reported appeared as we had expected, in fact better than expected, they were in fact all wrong.

In a panic I checked and rechecked the system.

Each time it confirmed my greatest fears.

I called others on the team and had them do the same.

As they reported back to me I had a sinking, sickening feeling growing in the pit of my stomach and I recall that the back of my head began to ache with a stabbing pain.

In the end, here is what I was able to confirm:

I had been paying significant sums of money for months and months and to my dismay I discovered I had been, in effect,
sending my most qualified and interested prospects some-place into cyberspace…..never to be heard from again.

Oh my gosh….what a nightmare…

Now…whether my contractor knew this or not is a matter of some debate.

I prefer to think he didn’t but frankly it is of no real consequence at this point…Money lost is money lost….

What’s important here is the learning opportunity for you.

Whether he was deceiving me intentionally or not, in the end the responsibility for this horrendous outcome was ultimately and solely mine.

Why?

Because it’s my business and I’m the one who did not “inspect what I expected” of my new contractor.

The entire mess was really my responsibility.

It could have been very easily avoided had I just taken the time to verify his work.

I should have ‘inspected’ what I ‘expected’.

In this case my failure to follow this simple little tenet cost me thousands upon thousands of dollars and an immeasurable volume of lost financial opportunity.

The good news is that I had this experience so you don’t have to.

As I said as I opened the story, I am embarrassed to say that have too many stories like this one to share from my experiences.

And….

This is just one of hundreds of similar pitfalls you’ll want to avoid as you work to create your perfect business.

One of the most challenging areas for me as I first got started was hiring the right people at the right time.

Sometimes I got lucky…but…

Sometimes I hired the right person at the wrong time.

Sometimes I hired the wrong person at the right time.

Sometimes I even hired the wrong person at the wrong time.

Trust me on this, these are ALL frustrating and COSTLY mistakes.

There were plenty of times I just threw up my hands and cried “I quit” in exasperation. (But dealing with that frustration is a story for another message).

Do you remember from the previous story that I knew pretty quickly that I needed to bring on some people to transform my cabinet shop into a business that delivered what I expected?

Well today I’m going to tell you how I went about it so you’ll learn from my (less than ideal) experience.

I started by defining all the jobs that I was doing myself at the time and divided them up into individual areas of responsibility.

I then wrote newspaper ads for each job.

As candidates called to inquire for each job posting I’d interview them on the phone first and then bring just the top candidates in to the shop to meet with me.

So far so good, right?

At the time I was still producing everything in the business myself so you can probably imagine what a nightmare it was to schedule all these interviews.

Whew! I was working some long hours those days…

At times I would find myself working until 2 or 3 in the morning because I had spent all afternoon interviewing people.

Many of whom turned out to be less than qualified…Not much of a life huh?

Certainly not the lifestyle freedom I had in mind when I started my own business.

As the pressure to get these jobs done kept mounting, I eventually began to compromise my better judgment and hire people just to get the bodies on board and working on the projects.

I figured I would be available to monitor them and make sure everything was done to my satisfaction and that making some progress was better than making none…

For instance,

instead of actually testing the skills of the painter/finisher, I took him at his word, checked a few of the references he’d
provided and brought him on board to do the finish work on a set of 20 walnut book cases for a prestigious law firm downtown.

and…

Instead of actually verifying the references of my installer, I ran out of patience and hired a guy who seemed qualified, had demonstrated some ability and whose claims sure sounded ideal.

Oh my gosh…WHAT A COLOSSAL MISTAKE!

I ended up with a complete and utter nightmare on my hands.

Every time I turned around there was another crisis or catastrophe to deal with.

In almost no time at all schedules slipped and I lost important contracts as a result.

Projects had to be redone because the work quality was so poor.

Customers became irate and with-held payment.

Believe it or not…

I even had an installer caught drinking from a collection of exotic liquors one of my clients had in the middle of the afternoon!!!

On the job!!!

Can you imagine how embarrassing that was for me?

Here I had put my reputation on the line…I’d staked my name and my personal commitment to negotiate the award of a large office renovation contract with one of the biggest commercial developers in the area….and this…idiot….was stealing the guys most expensive whiskey….in the middle of the afternoon…on the job site!

I was mortified and ashamed.

I really did go home and cry that night!

I’m telling you this story because I want you to see that I stupidly compromised one of the basics tenets of building a sound business….and as a result…….in less than a month my business had flown completely out of control and had become a complete and utter disaster.

I was working longer and longer hours, spending more and more of my diminishing revenue trying to recover, and falling
further and further behind.

And, worst of all it was all damaging my hard-earned reputation of excellence.

I was heartbroken…dejected…distraught….I felt like a total failure…

My girl friend’s father looked me straight in the eye and in a stern southern drawl (I lived in the South back then) asked…

“What the h%&& are you gonna do boy?”

Well, here is what I did:

At the end of the 6th week I just stopped. Yup….I just stopped.

NO! I didn’t quit…

I just stopped.

I closed the shop temporarily and sent everyone home.

I called what remained of all my clients and told them that we were going to stop work for 30 days.

Where appropriate I told them why.

If they couldn’t wait for me then I forfeited the contract.

By the end of it, this lesson had cost me tens of thousands of dollars not to mention 3 of my top 10 clients.

I’m going to tell you more of this story later.

But for the time being, I’ll leave you with this:

Before I re-opened the shop and started doing business again, my next hire was a new Business Manager.

I interviewed dozens of people and spoke to dozens of references for each.

I got to know this guy before I hired him….I spent real time with him…I met his family….

Look, I was planning on putting my livelihood in his hands and was going to be absolutely certain he was going to do
a better job with it than I could.

When it came time to hire him, I paid him way more than I was paying myself….

And it was worth every cent.

He and I created all kinds of new procedures, systems and Job performance standards.

We clearly defined roles and responsibilities for each position in the business and established simple verification procedures for hiring new people.

We briefed each employee and contractor we employed at the time to be certain they each understood these work standards.

We put them all through the process we had just created no matter how long they had been working with me.

If they objected or refused to do it, we let them go.

We left nothing to chance.

A few weeks later when we re-started the business, we had a well oiled machine….

I had all the right people…with all the right skills… doing all the right jobs…

And I’m pleased to tell you that that machine produced results orders of magnitude greater than any I had produced
previously….in any business….

It was an awesome experience…In no time at all I had recovered the financial short fall I’d experienced and began growing our revenues in excess 10% per month and more.

Our customer satisfaction and reputation for excellence returned….

My employees and contractors were satisfied and were happy to work the reasonable hours we all kept.

And best of all,

I was doing the work I had always dreamed of doing.

Can you imagine how elated I was?

Can you appreciate the stark contrast between this and that day I’d gone home literally in tears feeling an utter failure?

Can you imagine how gratifying it was the day I realized my business was no longer a fledgling startup but was instead an
astonishing success?

There are 2 lessons I want you to get from this story:

First, ALWAYS HIRE UP

By that I mean…

When you hire people…whether employees or contractors…

Always hire people who can do whatever job you need them to do better than you can do it yourself.

Second, ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS have them prove it!

It doesn’t matter how much time it takes or how many people you need to interview in the process.

Any compromise you make in this part of the process will cost you dearly later.

If you have to compromise anywhere, DO NOT do it here.

I’m not saying you shouldn’t trust people.

You should. You must in fact.

But verify that the trust is well placed before you hire them.

If necessary and appropriate, devise a test scenario for the candidate to handle….

One that verifies his or her ability to do the job.

When you check references, don’t just check the ones the candidate gives you.

Ask those people for other people….

Ask other people in the candidates industry if they know anything about him or her….

If you are working with a contractor or outsourcing agent, don’t just stop with the testimonials and references on their
web site…

ask around and check first and second level references there too.

Take the time necessary to dig a little and prove to yourself that this person can do a better job at whatever it is than you can.

If you’ll take the time to make sure you have the right person in the right role at the right time and surround yourself
with people who can do every job that needs to be done better than you can do it yourself…

EVERYONE WINS!

Your employee or contractor is accomplished and successful….

Your customers get the quality product they expect….

Your job becomes effortless….

Your business delivers the financial and lifestyle rewards to expect….

And continues to grow and prosper…

Got it?

Why do some businesses just seem to grow and grow unabated by economic turmoil or other circumstances while others struggle?

Why do some business owners seem to operate wildly successful businesses effortlessly, without struggle or strain while others seem to battle just to stay alive each and everyday?

Today I want to teach you one simple principle that will empower you to share this “effortless” success experience and I’ll use a story about General George Patton to illustrate.

You may already know that he is best known for his mastery of tank warfare.

In World War I, the tank was a technological innovation that changed everything about the battlefield. It transformed a battle from static; with two armies facing each other down from their trenches, to dynamic; no longer limited by a lack of movement.

And, as much of a strategic and tactical expert as General Patton had already established himself to be, after the introduction of the tank, he spent most of his time crawling around inside of one.

Imagine that!

Here he was, one of the, if not the most decorated generals of the time, and he was spending his time crawling in and around tanks. That’s quite an image isn’t it?

In a few months he learned everything there was to know about tanks and how they worked.

He knew where every part went.

He knew what it did and how it worked.

He knew how each part integrated with all the other parts.

And, in the end, it is no small exaggeration to say that it was Patton’s intimate knowledge of the tank that allowed him to apply this awesome innovation effectively and emerge victorious time and time again.

No, he never needed to build a tank.

No, he never needed to design a tank (although I suspect he provided some valuable input).

And frankly, I don’t know if he ever actually operated a tank in battle.

BUT…because he knew all there was to know about tanks, he could apply that awesome advantage effectively.

You’ll want to do the same thing with your business.

Know everything about it.

You have got to know everything about every part of your business.

You’ve got to know what all the parts are, what they all do, how they work and how they work and integrate with each other.

That does NOT mean you have to DO it all yourself.

It does NOT mean you have to build it all yourself.

But you DO have to understand it all.

No doubt this can be a challenge.

As you’ve learned from me already there are plenty of things about your business that you
won’t be good at doing. There are also a fair number of them you won’t be all that interested in learning about. And while you may never need to learn how to actually do them, you better know how they work and effect your business.

Sure you’re going to delegate them to others. In fact you must in order to remain focused
on your strengths. But keep in mind that delegation of responsibility does not equal abdication of responsibility. At the end of the day, it is your business and you need to know what’s going on in it.

I’m sure you’ve heard the expression, the devil is in the details. Simply put, if you are not tending to details, your business will end up in trouble “but quick”.

Imagine how empowered you will be when you know everything there is to know about your business (tank).

You’ll be able to leverage that knowledge into your own competitive advantage.

You will no longer be subject to surprises, unknowns and uncertainty.

You’ll no longer fall victim to shifts and changes in the market.

You’ll know what to do in every circumstance.

You’ll know which ‘lever’ to pull which button to push.

You will be free to move forward with confidence and assurance….ready to take on any challenge.

You’ll be able to innovate better solutions to your customer problems, provide more value and make money money because you know how your business works.

I am interested in hearing your thoughts about this article.

Do you have any “blind spots” in your business…anything you don’t really know or understand completely?

Do you see how they are keeping you from realizing all the success that’s possible for you?

What do you think you can do about them?

There are some things in life that seem like they are really ‘complicated’ or ‘risky’; being a parent, investing in the stock market and running a business of your own for instance.

When you look more closely though, you find that nothing could be further from the truth. These are all pretty simple, straight forward pursuits. So why do people get ‘stopped’ by the illusion of complexity and risk?

UNCERTAINTY.

Yup, when it really comes down to it, it is not complexity and risk that stops you. It is uncertainty.

You may be uncertain about the best school for your children or what interests you should encourage them to pursue.

You may be uncertain about which company, mutual fund, or real estate deal to invest in.

You may be uncertain about how to best go about building and growing your business (especially during challenging economic times).

You interpret the uncertainty – the unknown – as complexity and risk, so it stops you from making the decisions and taking the action necessary to get the results you want.

In my advisory role working with venture capital investors I’ve witnessed this hundreds of times throughout my career. Often when I was asked to evaluate an ailing company’s success potential, I would find that the business was stagnant or in slow growth because the owners were frozen by uncertainty. They had given up trying to innovate and improve because uncertainty had made everything appear too complicated and risky. It was like they thought they needed to be an industrial Einstein of some sort to invent a radical new way of doing business.

I see the same thing today with many would-be and existing home-based or small business owners. Uncertainty freezes people and every new idea is deemed to be too difficult and challenging or too risky to undertake. When in truth many of them are totally viable and often extremely simple innovations to make.

For example: A husband and wife team building a general contracting firm were stuck. They had been doing business for some time but had lost some key projects, felt they were slipping behind and did not know what to do differently. Uncertainty froze them in place and the longer they remained stuck there, the greater the risk they perceived. They would discuss the business and what to do about it constantly yet every idea was dismissed as too risky or difficult to pursue. I spent the morning with them and had them show me around the business. That afternoon I separated them and had each write a detailed description of exactly what they each wanted from the business in the next 12 months.

Guess what? The two visions were completely different. He had visions of personally managing expansive crews of workers on an ever growing number of larger and larger projects. In her mind they would grow the business by hiring good project managers and leverage themselves out of that project role and instead invest their time in managing the business. Because they each had very different views for the successes of the business, they were always uncertain about how one idea or another would serve his or her vision. The uncertainty showed up as complexity and risk. Once we combined these views and created a common set of success goals uncertainty vanished, sales increased, the business rebounded nicely and most importantly they are both thrilled with the business they are building.

In another case, a Chiropractic practice I worked with was struggling to grow as planned. Health professionals tend to think that they should not have to “sell” their services and skills; people should just discover them. The office had established a good network for referrals and they had a healthy number of first-time clients coming in regularly. However, once the client was out of the crisis of pain and discomfort he or she would stop their regular treatments. They were uncertain about how to address the problem and as a result, much like with my previous example, dismissed many creative ideas from employees and others as too risky or complicated.

After a day of observation, I wrote a simple script for them to use to explain to the patients why it is in their best interests to come back regularly for treatment. Up until then they would just say ‘thanks for coming I’ll see you next time’. This alone increased the number of patient visits from 150 per week to around 220…almost a 50% increase in business. Once they had broken the death grip of uncertainty they were open to lots of innovative ideas and with the addition of a few simple and relevant products for their patients to buy, this business expanded by nearly 90% in 6 months without implementing anything truly complex or risky.

There are many more examples of this sort. The message is clear. You don’t need to be a rocket scientist to make money in business. Unfortunately most owners are so personally invested and close to the business that they cannot see the opportunities which will make the difference. Since nobody is an expert at everything, uncertainty sets in and the business freezes in place.

Take a minute and think about areas you are uncertain.

Do you see uncertainty as complexity or risk? Is it stopping you?

Is it stopping the flow of innovative new approaches to achieving the success you want?

What would it take to eliminate that uncertainty?

As you read this post, keep in mind that my commitment is to provide you the most valuable and insightful information available to help you find the perfect business for you. One that ignites your passions and delivers the joy-filled, successful and rewarding life you desire.

A favorite early Saturday morning ritual of mine is browsing about the TED network watching video presentations about various topics that interest me or catch my eye at the moment. TED is best described as a clearinghouse of information that offers free knowledge and inspiration from the world’s most inspired thinkers, and also a community of curious souls to engage with ideas and each other.

This Saturday morning, I came across the video I have provided below. It may seem a bit off topic at first, but if you will watch it all the way through, I believe you will be profoundly inspired by the insightful and relevant perspective it offers.

I believe you will see that the circumstances that block you in your daily life are the result of the assumptions and beliefs you carry with you. With different assumption and beliefs, a radical new set of options and pathways appear.

By changing what you believe to be true about what is possible for you in your quest to find the perfect business you are liberated to “lift off from the world of struggle and sail into a vast universe of possibility.”

In the little book, “Who Moved My Cheese”, Spencer Johnson and Kenneth Blanchard illustrate what happens when we refuse to effectively deal with change and how those willing to open themselves up to new possibilities find prosperity.

The shift in economic conditions and the reaction by the majority mirror the irrational behavior of the little people, Hem & Haw who attached significance and meaning to their old cheese and refused to face the change that was before them.

Little Haw got hungry enough to eventually begin the search for new cheese even if that meant searching in places he’d never been before.

If you are looking for financial security where you’ve always found it before …I’m here to tell you, it’s not there any more and if you don’t decide to look elsewhere your situation can only get worse.

If, however, you are willing to see the opportunities where they now are, and no matter your circumstance, believe the facts I am going to share with you rather than the media and political hype – your place in financial freedom is virtually guaranteed.

So, I ask again, what if you could know the right thing to do to ensure you profit from today’s economic conditions?

I have a different take on ‘the economy’ and this thing we call a crisis:

It probably comes as no surprise that I am a big fan of my good friend Bob Parsons, founder and CEO of GoDaddy. Bob publishes a video blog which provides 5 down-to-earth business building tips.

He released one today that gives you 5 Tips on how to make the ‘troubled economy’ work for you:

Here are the 5 Tips:

#1. When other business owners pull back and go conservative you should pour it on and invest in improving your products and services.

#2. Ramp UP your advertising efforts. You can get lower rates and get better exposure.

#3. Pump-up the volume of your value proposition. Provide more value than ever and make sure your prospects know it.

#4. Look around a little and recruit high quality top talent which has likely not been available before

#5. Renegotiate with your vendors. New suppliers want your business and are willing to earn it. And your suppliers will be ready to deliver costs savings to keep you with them.

Be alert and take advantage of opportunities which are not available to you during less troubled times.

Let me know what you think of Bob’s tips by commenting below.

She was a little startled by seeing the Cheshire Cat sitting on a bough in a tree a few yards off.  The Cat only grinned when it saw Alice.

“Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?”

“That depends a good deal on where you want to get to,” said the Cat.

“I don’t much care where,” said Alice

“Then it doesn’t matter which way you go,” said the Cat

You might be surprised (and perhaps a bit relieved) to know that many, if not most, people never really ponder the depths of what they truly want in any substantive way.

You may have a general idea of what you want your perfect business to deliver.  But do you have that crystal clear vision and really know exactly what you want?  Does your vision have all the sensory vividness of reality?  In your mind’s eye, can you experience having it right now?

Keep in mind, that if you cannot see it clearly in your mind, you cannot have it in your experience.

In this video I give you a super-fun exercise which ‘tricks-out’ the subconscious saboteurs that keep you from having that crystal clear vision of what you want.

I hope you enjoy watching this video as much as I enjoyed making it.

I am anxious to hear what you want. Watch the video, do the exercise and come back and share your experience.

I’m standing for all that is possible for you in life and business.

Sincerely,

This lesson gives you 4 practical actions you can take right now to immediately advance your success in life and business.

Building a successful business is as much about developing your individual capacity to succeed as it is creating or marketing “slick” products. There is no doubt you will be challenged along the way. All business owners are.

What makes the difference between the wildly successful, the average successes, and those who struggle has more to do with the mastery of personal success practices and habits than any other factor.

In this lesson I shared 4 simple success tips that will accelerate your success. You can see from the comments below that this lesson has had a big impact on hundreds of others thus far, so let me challenge you to try them out for 30 days and see what happens.

I am excited to read your thoughts about this lesson.

Do you see evidence of these 4 saboteurs in your experiences thus far?

Do you see how the techniques I’ve shared with you will help you avoid these success thieves?

Please share your thoughts and any insights you have to offer in this regard below.

Keep an eye out for my next email. It contains a link to a resource which builds on what you’ve received thus far and guarantees you win-big in life and business.

How to Overcome the Top 4 Success Saboteurs

In this video I give you a simple yet powerful exercise to establish a solid foundation for finding your perfect business.

By watching this video and completing the exercise you’ll get a crystal clear understanding of what really success means to you in the context of finding your perfect business. Do it now, you might be surprised by the outcome.

I read a quotation recently: “The first step to getting what you want is knowing what it is”

Interesting isn’t it?

Do the exercise provided in the video and let me know how your NEW definition of success compares or contrasts with your previous one?

Tell me what else you learned from this video and the exercise I provided by commenting below.

Before you go, consider this:

Most people go through life seeking a ‘generalized’ vision of success defined by things like “more free time”, “more money”, “a nicer car”, “bigger house”, etc. They work harder, longer and chart their progress like a graph, “up and to the right”. But the majority of the time, even if you get these things you still don’t experience the success you seek. Why?

Because you never really defined what success IS.

It’s like trying to travel from San Fransisco to Dallas by going a little east and a little south each day.

True, you’re going in the correct general direction, however not only won’t you know when you get there, but a little too much of either and you’ll most likely end up swimming in either the Gulf of Mexico or the Atlantic Ocean.

Don’t be surprised if this turns out to be more difficult than you thought it will be. So many of the decisions you make and the actions you take each day are sourced by subconscious beliefs about what success is ’supposed’ to be.

I’m going to show you how to ‘trick-out’ this subconscious interference in the next lesson.

I am excited to hear your thoughts about the information I provided in this video lesson and am standing for all that’s possible for you in life and business.

Be sure to comment below.

Sincerely,

Steve

PS – Let’s face facts here. Humans are just not very good at holding themselves accountable for ‘challenging’ matters like the regular disciplined focus on goals and objectives. This is another reason every successful person you know of has at least one coach or mentor keeping them accountable and supporting their success efforts along the way. Nobody…no matter how enlightened, knowledgeable or experienced…can generate success on their own.

That’s another of the reasons I created ThePerfectBizBuilder Coaching Program. You’ll have dedicated, direct, one-on-one access to a top caliber professional business success expert. I guarantee you’ll remain laser focused on in accomplishment of the success you seek. Trust me, I know. ;0)

There is no other program like it anywhere. There is no cost to apply. Check it out and let me know what you think: ThePerfectBizBuilder Coaching Program

Check out what others are saying about this amazing program:

“I am totally stoked and wanted to take a moment to give you my impression of the coaching program. You have gone above and beyond what I expected of you and the results have been amazing. This is the same business I’ve been mulling over for months now with one big difference – Now I believe I can build it!” – Matthew S. Tucson, AZ

“My coach has been tremendously helpful in bringing focus and clarity to my business efforts….I always look forward to our sessions, knowing that I will come away with a new perspective…I noticed that before my work with my coach, I was unfocused and going in too many directions, and now I am much clearer about who I am marketing to, what their needs will be and what I need to be effective in promoting myself in the marketplace. After just a few weeks, I have already received three referrals for work and more keeps coming my way!” – Leslie T. Hawaii, USA

.

A few people have asked me what qualifies me to help you find your perfect business.

It’s a fair question.  Here is a video that explains.

This project represents the culmination of my life’s work to date.  In an effort to keep my videos short I cut some elements of my story out.  Perhaps I’ll add them back in later.  I have some great stories to share.

The important thing is for you to know that I have drawn from all I have learned in my 38 years in business to put this program together for you.  I am sincerely committed to helping you have what you want in life and business.

I look forward to hearing your comments and answering questions. Please share and thoughts, comments, or questions below.

I consider this opportunity a great privilege and appreciate your trust and confidence.

I’m standing for all that is possible for you in life and business.

Steve

In the previous video I spoke about the important distinction between the entrepreneur and the proprietor.

I explained that it is vital for you to know which appeals to you because it determines many attributes of the business systems you will put in place to create your perfect business.

There is a 2nd vital distinction for you to consider before you go any further.  Watch this video to learn more:

Here is the 5 question survey drawn from Jeff Landers’ book, Home Office Cure From Hell, as I described in the video.  Answer the following 5 questions authentically from your heart and finish watching the video:

I have been supporting and coaching professional people a long time. Nearly 25 years. I’ve been building businesses even longer.

In that time I have made a number of observations about the characteristics that distinguish entrepreneurs and small business proprietors. I share them with you in this video:

As you begin the process of finding the perfect business for yourself, understanding the distinction between the entrepreneur and proprietor is vitally important to you.

While you can certainly create astonishing success as either one of them, knowing which appeals to you and aligns best with your goals and what you want to invest your energy doing will help you understand the business systems and processes you will want to plan on implementing.

It’s probably clear to you now that if you design or organize your business with you in role of proprietor when what you really want to do is coordinate the activities of others you will end up frustrated and unsuccessful, no matter how much money you make.

Likewise, if you are most interested in building your business around yourself and your ’secret-success-sauce’, then placing yourself in the role of the entrepreneur will be equally dissatisfying.

Which are you?

Do you think you can be a little of both?

Please share your comments and any questions you might have here on this blog. I will do my best to personally answer them.

Okay, that’s it for today.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this 1st short lesson and put it to good use. Please be sure to comment below.

Just making this one simple decision will help you make serious forward progress with you business or business concept.

Stay tuned for lesson number two where I’ll reveal another important distinction that will make a world of difference for you.

I recently read an article about Imari Harvard, CEO and the way he came to conceive of and create Timeless Entertainment Concepts who almost by accident, tapped into a timeless truth: Nostalgia sells..

Harvard reports to Entrepreneur.com reporter Robert Jones, “My wife and I just wanted to put together an event where folks could come out for some nostalgic games, cocktails and conversation.”

The story goes that 80 people showed up to play board games from their childhood.  Games like Chutes & Ladders, Candy Land and Twister.  The following month there were 150 and a new business Play Date Atlanta was born.  Not long after Harvard expanded his business to four other cities using a licensing model and is projecting a whopping $250,000 in sales this year.

Imagine “800 well-dressed, middle-aged adults are sipping cocktails, listening to jazz . . . and playing Candy Land or Twister.”

Is there any reason this could not be you?

I was sharing this story with my wife at dinner and she reciprocated with one she picked up from our veterinarian:

She had taken our 2 year old Shepherd/Chow to the vet for some shots.  While speaking with him he was telling her about the book about nutrition for dogs he had just written.  Sure we all read and listen to the antioxidant adds for dog food, but this is different.

Did you know that way back when, before humans got involved, dogs, which were then more closely related to wolves I guess, did not eat beef.  Sure they ate meet, but not beef.

Can’t you just see in those early years of existence, the ‘prehistoric cows’ grazing away with no concern whatsoever as a pack of canines wandered through.  Well, whatever.

The point is, here is this veterenarian with a very successful animal care practice which he absolutely loves.  He writes this great book about something he is sincerely passionate about. And he is creating an internet information publishing business in his spare time.  A business that will probably end up paying him for than his primary vocation and guarantee the retirement he desires.  Just by sharing something he is interested in.

Is there any reason this could not be you?

If you think there are, then you want to be absolutely certain tune in to my next post.   You need to tune in to the next post to learn what I have to share with you.

FACT:  The real reason you have not yet found the perfect business for yourself is not what you think it is.

Just imagine what it will be like to get paid for sharing something you love.

I’ll make a deal with you.

If you will share with me the one thing you believe you would love doing as a vocation more than anything else in this world, whether hobby, vocation, recreation, or past-time, I will help you break through everything that is keeping you from doing it for a living.

In fact, I’ll do one better than that.

If you will share ANY business idea, I will help you determine whether or not it is right for you and if it is I’ll help break through everything that is keeping you from doing it.

Just share your idea in the comment section below.

I recently had an opportunity to spend 3 days sequestered in an invitation only brainstorming session with the top marketers of current times.

These are without exception the most intelligent and aware business professionals I have ever met….and I have met a bunch in nearly 4 decades.

To a person (because some of them were extraordinarily intelligent and talented women), each brought amazing insight to current business trends and how to capitalize on the market opportunity.

There is NO economic crisis to these people.

Of particular note is my new friend Mike Dillard.

Mike has created a number of amazing programs for MLMers.  But the principles he shares within these program actually apply to all businesses models.  They WILL increase your capacity for success.

..

It is amazing to me just how many people today believe they are ‘stuck’ doing work that they think they either have to do or are supposed to do instead of work they really want to do.

This has never been more evident than it is right now with the economy, the stock market not responding well, election year politics keeping you up at night, the leading edge of the baby-boomers approaching retirement and the trailing edge of this generation seeking a more gratifying lifestyle.

As I meet with people day in and day out discussing the success dreams they have, I believe that the most difficult thing for ‘would-be-if-I-could-be entrepreneurs’ to accept is that they REALLY CAN do what they love and make a go of it.

As a weekend bonus I want to share a story I found today that just says it all.

And now they are running a $100M per year globale enterprise.

Watch this video and have an amazing, creative, and exciting day.

Are you familiar with the story of Randy Pausch?

You may recognize him better as “the last lecture guy”, a reference he was given for the now-famous talk “Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams” he gave on Sept 18, 2007 at the Carnegie Mellon Universities annual “Last Lecture” series.

Randy was a CMU professor, Disney Imagineer, electronic arts expert, and co-founder of CMU’s Entertainment Technology Center (ETC). His life legacy is an extraordinary chronical of creativity and meaningful contribution.

In the midst of some of his greatest personal accomplishments, Randy was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and given 6 months to live. Instead of becoming morose and pitiful, he was ignited with purpose. The lecture I referenced above (linked below), is his way of passing forward some of the greatest lessons on life and success.

Randy died on July 25th 2008, but not before, in the fulfillment of his purpose, he changed the lives of literally millions of people all around the world with this lecture.

In it he talks about:

  • His dreams.
  • Helping other people achieve their dreams.
  • And the lessons learned about what lets you get to achieve your dreams.

The central theme of the message in Randy’s lecture is simple and relevant to each of you:

Your experience of success in life comes from the inside and is expressed outwardly in the way you live your life and the relationships you form.

>Above all have fun.

Randy succeeded in achieving his vision for professional life and as a result millions of kids having fun while learning something hard.

I want you to know that neither the abbreviated (10 minute) nor the full length (75 minute) versions of the lecture are not esoteric hyperbole.

Trust me, you will be entertained and educated by a true master.

I want nothing more than to help you find your perfect life success, your bliss. It is clear to me that the experiences of my life have equipped me and brought me here and now for the expressed purpose of doing just that.

One way I am particularly well equipped to do that is by helping you build your perfect business. One that ignites your passions and delivers the life you desire. That is my commitment to you.

In an even greater sense though, Randy is a champion of YOUR cause.

You are here because you want something more in life.

You are here because you are looking for a business that will allow you to live the life you will love to live.

There is nothing wrong with wanting things and money.

By finding your perfect business, you will have plenty of both.

But these are not causes powerful enough to deliver the experience of a successful life.

They are not why you are seeking your perfect business.

The central theme of this week’s posts is expressed by Randy:

Your success will determined from the inside out.

If you lead your life the right way, the karma will take care of the rest.

The dreams will come to you.

Please comment here and let me know what you get from Randy’s inspirational message.

I am standing for all that is possible for you in life and business.

If you will share ANY business idea, I will help you determine whether or not it is right for you and if it is I’ll help break through everything that is keeping you from doing it.

Just share your idea in the comment section below.

I have been supporting and coaching professional people a long time.  Nearly 25 years.  In that time I have made a number of observations about the characteristics that distinguish entrepreneurs, intrapraneurs,  and small business proprietor.

As you begin the process of finding the perfect business for yourself, understanding these distinctions will be important to you.  While you can certainly create astonishing success as any one of them, knowing which

In my previous two posts I referenced to a few key trends that are catalyzing the explosion of the business opportunities that exist for you.

When I first got started building businesses I immediately realized that I needed a way to keep track of a lot of information.

Some of the information was related to operational business decisions and activities.

Some was related to strategy and planning.

Some of it was related to areas of personal growth and development.

Through the years I developed a practice of keeping what I now call “The Control Book” for each business endeavor.

The Control Book is part journal, part business plan, part a brainstorming tool and part a forecasting / business performance record.

In effect every significant idea, meeting, discussion, strategy, decision, projection and result is formally or informally documented or in some way represented in “The Control Book”

Beginning with a 3-ring loose-leaf notebook with a half dozen topical divisions in it, The Control Book starts with a written narrative describing what you want to accomplish with a particular business or project.  From there, each time you do any kind of substantive development in thoughts, words, or actions, some kind of entry gets made in “The Control Book”.

To be clear often times this documenting may amount to be nothing more than a hand-written post-it note stuck to a journal page somewhere in a section of the book.  Other times it may be a doodle-ridden page torn from a spiral-bound notepad recording the important points you collected from a conversation or meeting.  And still for others might include a carefully produced spreadsheet that may have been used as the basis of a discussion with partners or associates.

The key is that this discipline and resource will be incredibly useful for you throughout the process.  I encourage you to implement it right from the start.

As you embark on this journey to find and build your perfect business, begin by creating you Control Book.

  1. Immediately purchase a 3-ring binder.
  2. Place about 100 sheets of paper in the binder, use dividers if you like.
  3. Label the binder ”My Perfect Business Control Book”
  4. Place some photos, magazine clips, or other visual images that represent the life you want your perfect business to deliver on the front of you Control Book.

From that point on, the completion of each exercise I give you, along with any other thoughts, ideas, discussions and activities pertinent to you finding and starting the perfect business for you should be added and kept in this book.

The information you compile in this binder as I escort you through the completion of a wide variety of critically important developmental and thought exercises will keep you focused on the pefect outcome.

Keep your “Control Book” with you throughout the process of finding and creating your perfect business.

You never know when you will receive an inspired idea that you need to capture.  You never know when you will be presented with a learning opportunity and need to review the information provided.

In the end, you will not only have found your perfect business, but you will also have a record of how you did it and why you have done what you have done each and every step of the way.

As an added bonus, you will have created a road map for others to follow when they go to pursue their own perfect business success.

And last but not least you will have an amazing record of the life altering events you experience along the way.  As you travel the beaches of the world, rich, accomplished, and successful you will be surprised how rewarding, and at times comical, a review of your Control Book(s) will be.

Give this a try.  Come back and comment here and let me know how it works for you.

Believe it ot not, this is the practical stuff that works.

I’m standing for all that is possible for you in life and business.

Sincerely & gratefully,

No matter what kind of business you are building, no matter what kind of product you are marketing, unless you have covered the basics with a simple 7 point marketing plan the odds of success are no greater than a role of the dice.

You don’t need to gamble with your business though. Nor do you need a lot of elaborate analysis.

If you think through and research the true answers to Al Lautenslager’s (Guerrilla Marketing) 7 simple questions, you will significantly improve the probability of success.

What is the purpose of your marketing?

Who is your target market?

What is your niche?

What are the benefits and competitive advantage?

What is your identity?

What tactics, strategies and weapons will you use to carry out your marketing?

How much money will you spend on your marketing; what’s your marketing budget?

When I see people or companies struggle, often time, they have not thought through one or more of these points.

I encourage you to read Al’s entire article.

Most importantly, make sure you implement this simple strategy before your next market launch.

Keep learning.

Sincerely standing for all that is possible for you.

I came across an extraordinary article and video this morning on TED while doing some research for my next eBook. I am sure you will enjoy it:

“Why do people succeed?

Is it because they’re smarter than the rest?

Are they just lucky?

Neither.

But what Do successful people know that others don’t.

Analyst Richard St. John condenses 10 years of over 500 interviews into an unmissable 3-minute slideshow on the real secrets of success.

“A self-described average guy who found success doing what he loved, Richard St. John spent more than a decade researching the lessons of success — and distilling them into 8 words, 3 minutes and…

Richard St. John knew how he had found success. But he couldn’t get away from the question: Why him? He thinks of himself as an average guy, not talented at school, not terribly handsome or particularly lucky.

So he spent more than a decade interviewing 500 people he defines as successful — from architect Frank Gehry to non-celebrities successful in their own lives.

The resulting book, Spike’s Guide to Success: Stupid, Ugly, Unlucky and RICH, has spawned a new avenue of success for St. John as a motivational speaker and talk-show star. His newest book is 8 to Be Great: The 8 Traits that Lead to Great Success.

This is another great set of resources to help you create the successful life you desire.

It is often the case that the people who attend our various success coaching programs explore and find whole new venues for creating the life success they desire; entrepreneurial. for retirement, or otherwise.

Aside from the subconscious limiting beliefs and counter-intentions we help them overcome, many arrive to our program believing that it is difficult to take a concept to success. They think they need to have special skills or talents or that they need relationships with other industry specialists and experts like publishers.

The truth is that, with the maturity and power of the internet, and a veritable army of success mentors and coaches to help you, it has never been easier to build the dream of financial independence and success.

Here is a great article about this very thing by Justin Petroccelli, Entrepreneur.com:

Blogosphere to Stratosphere

It illuminates how savvy bloggers are turning mere concepts into the building blocks of a media empire.

The internet has made it possible for almost anyone to start a business. But beyond that, the proliferation of blogs means that now, more than ever, an idea in and of itself can become a business.” Justin Petroccelli

Do you have something to say?

Trust your instincts and inspiration. Put up a blog and start saying it.

You will be surprised by how many people want to hear your voice.

PS – Please let me know if you found this article inspirational or helpful in some way.

I have been finishing up my most recent book project and was doing a bit of research on the web this past weekend.

I happened on to these videos of Earl Nightingale re-recording his famous audio program “The Strangest Secret” which was originally recorded in 1956. It outsold all other non-musical, non-entertainment productions.

I enjoyed them and thought you would too:

The Strangest Secret – Part 2

I particularly like his opening comment about starting your day with pen in hand on Part 3.

I would love to hear your thoughts. Please comment here.

I was reminded recently of a fantastic book I read some time ago called “A Champion Lives Within“.

I rifled back through my library and found the copy that my uncle had given me years ago. I re-read it and was reinvigorated and inspired to share it with you.

In it, author Boyd C Matheson shares the story of the five ‘principle’ stones that it took for David to slay Goliath. After defeating Goliath, you may already know that David become a champion of everything he did amassing large sums of wealth and riches. He was loved by everyone in the kingdom.

It is a wonderful reminder that we all can indeed live the limitless and successful life of a champion.

Matheson writes:

“…the Champion in David didn’t rest with just one victory. He kept his stones close by and lived the principle that each one conveyed. David was not only a champion of the king’s army, but by using what he had learned, he became a champion teacher, a champion salesman, a champion builder, and more. He was successful in each thing he did.”

Matheson reminds the young character in the story as I remind you:

“…you have been given all that you need to slay the Goliaths of this life and become a great champion. Remember to review the message written in this booklet often, and always keep the five stones near you to remind you of the five key phrases that will assure success and happiness.”

The Five Key Phrases (stones) are:

“I Am Different From Everyone:

I am unique. No one in the world is like me. I am proud of who I am and my unique qualities. The world needs me to be me. I don’t worry that I don’t have all the talents that others have. I am different from every other of God’s creations and I am the only one who can perform the mission God sent me to do. I am valuable because I am me.

I Am A Person Without Limitations:

I have the potential to accomplish anything I really put my mind to. I am not afraid of failure. I love a challenge. I write down specific goals for myself. I attach a goal line to each of my goals. I visualize myself reaching each goal.

I Am Satisfied Only With My best Effort

I enjoy the feeling I get when I know I have given my all. I understand that I do not have to be the victor in order to be a champion. I always give my very best, that I may avoid the dark valleys of mediocrity and enjoy the bright sunshine on the peaks of success.

I Am Determined To Succeed

Never, never will I give up! I continue to strive for success even when the road is hard. I don’t let discouragement pull me off of my designed course. I constantly hope, dream, struggle, and work with determination to become a champion. I know that determination is worth far more than natural ability.

I Am A Champion

I believe in me. I believe in who I am and in what I can become. I don’t allow others to determine my view of myself. I am a champion. I think positvely and know that the champion that lives within me will emerge in greatness and glory.”

With these five stones of wisdom you can slay the giants (limiting beliefs) of mediocrity, discouragement, failure and all the other Goliaths that will attempt to destroy your destined success.

Lastly and perhaps most importantly Matheson reminds us:

In order for you to succeed and be a champion of life, love must be at the center of all you do. If you have not love for each of your fellow men, the five stones which you possess are worthless. Love all and do nothing save it be with love.”

PS – As always I look forward to your comments.

While doing research for some new projects I am starting I came across this video.

I can not state these 4 steps to productivity and success more clearly than, “4-Hour Work Week” author, Tim Ferris can.

He consolidates the key changes you must make in order to accomplish more and win big in business.

Napoleon Hill, one of the greatest contemporary thinkers on the subject of the power of the mind, invested over 20 years interviewing and studying the success secrets employed by hundreds of the wealthiest and most successful men in history. From this research, he concludes in his widely read book, “Think and Grow Rich - The Man Who Thought His Way“:

“Thoughts are things” and “What the mind of man can conceive and believe it can achieve.”

Isn’t it amazing that you can watch and listen to him explain what he found by studying the thoughts, beliefs, and activities of the most successful people in history?

Enjoy!
