Dan Pink has changed the way companies view the modern workplace. He is currently working on a new book on the science and economics of motivation. You get a glimpse of the significance of his work in this brief video.

I too am a big fan of Ideas Worth Spreading (TED)… I had seen this one before, but it is brilliant and refreshing even the 2nd time through. Then we need to beat them with a stick if they don’t pay attention. Oh. …Wait a minute! What was that about extrinsic motivation? I better watch that video again.

I’m a huge fan of TED. Another great video from them.
It’s interesting, I’ve always thought that people are motivated by their salary or income.
But I guess he is right, in enterpreneurship people are more motivated by doing what they love, being their our boss, having flexibility and control over their lifes. And these things are maybe bigger motivator than just an high income.
Also once you focus on what you love, the money will come.

This is a great video and I hope a lot of business owners get a chance to see it.
Coming from a company that I feel used to be quality oriented and honestly cared about the workers to a company that shifted to quantity and now years later is struggling in every possible way. It’s an absolute shame that in their attempt to keep things afloat they have forgotten the humanistic factor and the words “Thank you” and “Good job”. Appreciating each employee and recognizing all as equals no matter what job or position they fill. Without them, there is no business.
There is an abundance of knowledge amongst workers and staff but management doesn’t seem to be interested nor do I beleive, have any idea how to bring forth this knowledge. There is so much damage to moral and everyone seems to be hanging on. It’s a sad situation.
I beleive if companies want to engage their workers they should be adopting plans such as the ones demonstrated in the video, I can see how it can work to turn this one around.
I, unfortunately, work for a firm that has gone from 10 years of peon empowerment back to top down direction . Micromanaging.
We now require 30% more manpower (mainly in admin) to provide the same service level to the public.
Our industry? County government.
So, I’ve experienced both mgmt approaches in my 30 year career and hands down agree with Mr. Pink!

No we are unique this is what I have found so annoying trying to help others that are alredy struggling thats why I chat every time I get an opportunity at the bus stop or any where , no never said I know all,eternally grateful for all that you have showen me because I love to learn new things tha tis hence why the communication on the web… thank you so for the Video . Steve – Management studies have been dissected, studied and reported for many years…..and I believe that each opinion can be found during each business cycle. Suggest that info / studies presented on the internet must have a source / date identified to understand the timeliness and impact. Kinda reminds me of a paper I saw the other day on the interneet that started, “87 years ago, my grandpappy was sitting with some of his friends about the pot-belly stove and he thought….”. And the spokes person stated with great conviction that one of the early Presidents of the USA had given this speech…… Shall we accept anything that is presented on the internet without proper sourcing!?!?!? Thanks for feeding the hunger! Now I want to know if we have learned how to fish!?!?
Ted was very good. I beleve in working with anyone I don’t beleve in pushing.the main thing is to get the job done.
Steve, I am not sure what happened to my earlier comments. This reminds me of the 3M business model which encourages employees to be innovative and to present a business idea to a panel which has the authority to provide a budget and a time period in which the innovator is permitted to develop the business idea. If the idea is a success, the innovator becomes manager of the separate branch or division of 3M (Minnesota Manufacturing and Mining) If it is not successful the innovator is reabsorbed into his or her previous department and life goes on until he can come up with another idea which the panel deems worth another attempt. If the idea is a success, the innovator becomes head of a separate department of branch of the company with all of the attendant rewards. (i.e. Scotch Tape, surgical tapes, post it notes, etc. ) By allowing innovative thinking and providing a way of investigating the innovator’s ideas, the company has been able to reduce turnover within the company and develop a number of separate profit centers for the company while retaining valuable, creative employees.
For me, it encourages me to share the wealth produced as well as the work necessary to create the profits and services offered by any company in which I work.

I’ve got some thinkin’ to do in regards to my own enterprises and how to best use this information from Daniel Pink, but one thing has happened already. I feel totally validated to have chosen my path, the path of self-employment, always pursuing something that I believe in. Autonomy, Mastery, and Purpose ARE the things that have always motivated me. Now, instead of feeling slightly quirky for refusing to embrace a 9-5 life, I can see that I’ve been working toward a more futuristic achievement all along. Thank you so much for that shot in the arm. My self-doubts just melted away.
I feel that it is our inner spirit that motivates all of us to be a part of a bigger picture. When the workplace allows us to become a team member, an active participant, rather than merely an employee filling a need a position, everyone gains.Multiple minds working toward something bigger then themselves can bring a broader perspective than one mind working alone.
Very interesting scientific studies. Sure blows the general theroy of sales commissions being the driving force. Will have to chew on that a while…..My son worked for a major cell communications company and had flex hours, free lunch room, could work from home or anywhere (we sometimes went fishing and he would take his laptop with satelite com to answer trouble calls). He was well compensated and loved what he did. He and the rest of the team were very creative to get the “job” done. Enter new owners….no flex time, no free lunch, office work hours required, dress code ( they worked in a secured closed building with no outside people allowed in heavens knows some big boss might see them in jeans or heaven forbid shorts!)People started leaving like rats deserting a sinking shipThe compensation changed (still excellent) but no quarterly bonsus for a job well done. They even payed my son a huge bonus to stay for three months (otherwise no one would have stayed). Moral dropped like a rock my son hated his job and later took his huge knowledge base of skills and went to the competition. It’s not everything he wanted in the way of freedom, but light years ahead fo the previous employer.Lesson learned!

I do not believe that most companies/businesses today feel that sticks and carrots alone motivate people to be more productive. For example, some 30 years ago the quality movement was introduced and with it came self directed teams, quality circles and other interventions that allowed workers to have their own atonomy, creative input, the ability to hire/fire and even set their own compensation.Concepts like open book management allowed workes to share ideas and profits, improve work process and be tied to a greater purpose defined by the overall profitability of the business/company. Also today we see companies offering health care benefits, day care, fitness facilities, flexible work hours, ability to work from home, career path options and training to upgrade skills and mastery. To some, these benefits and work flexibility are just as important as the carrots.It is evident that business does recognize that you need more than sticks and carrots to motivate workers. What I believe companies/business/workers do not do well are:1. The individual worker does not know or think about how he or she can bring more value to the company and thus more reward for themselves.2. Most companies/business do not foster an evironment of innovation where creative thinking, worker input and value growth are encouraged or rewarded. To survive business must address how it can be better today while becomming different for the challenges of tomorrow. To do this all workers need to be engaged in a meaningful way.
Wow. This was a fantastic video. Thank you Steve. I am also a huge fan of TED.com but I haven’t seen this one yet. What Dan said about huge difference between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation may be jaw-dropping to the majority of people, because the majority is used to conservative thinking and conservative methods. But you intuitively recognize it as the truth. The way I see it is this: You cannot impose carrots and sticks, or rewards and punishment on people and expect them to be imaginative and creative geniuses that will skyrocket your business. Genius requires freedom and respect. Freedom of choice is a deep psychological need of us humans, much stronger than the need for material gains. I admit that this is not obvious at all, and especially if you are on the pay-giver’s side of the game. But the smartest entrepreneurs are intuitively, in my modest opinion, great psychologists, hence the examples of Google and other leaders in their respective fields. What they do is they actually inspire creative chaos and brainstorming in their people and then simply collect the fruits. Brilliant
But hey, we are evolving constantly, and those who follow this example will reap the rewards. The trick is to loosen the grip of control, let ideas stir up, then select the best and go with them. Imagination is really the greatest creative force. Albert Einstein’s mantra was: “Imagination is more important than knowledge.” The implications of this are obvious to all who choose to wake up and implement new strategies in their business. But then again, it takes guts too
