In the previous video I spoke about the important distinction between the entrepreneur and the proprietor.
I explained that it is vital for you to know which appeals to you because it determines many attributes of the business systems you will put in place to create your perfect business.
There is a 2nd vital distinction for you to consider before you go any further. Watch this video to learn more:

Here is the 5 question survey drawn from Jeff Landers’ book, Home Office Cure From Hell, as I described in the video. Answer the following 5 questions authentically from your heart and finish watching the video:
1. When you fantasize about your successful business, what scenario appeals to you the most?
- Many employees, a nice office space buzzing with activity and the knowledge that you are building a well-known regional or national company and brand.
- Great clients (that you pick and choose) with challenging and reputation-building projects, and a casual relaxed environment, plenty of extra time for leisure, home responsibilities, and family.
2. When you think about the perfect workday, which description is more in line with your way of thinking?
- A cup of Starbucks coffee to get you going, in the office by 8:00 a.m., eat lunch at a fancy restaurant with a prospective client, high-powered afternoon meetings with investment bankers and members of the media, a strategic planning session with your senior staff, complete employee reviews until 7:30 p.m., meet with colleagues for networking and drinks, get home by 11 p.m.
- Up at 8:00 a.m., get the kids off to school, at your desk in the spare bedroom working in your sweats until noon, grab a cold burrito from the fridge, conference call with clients while throwing a load of laundry into the washer, pick up the kids at school at 3 p.m., coach soccer, finish a new client proposal, and send invoices. Dinner with spouse and kids at 7:00 p.m., check email, blog, do a dozen little things that need to get done, read a few chapters of a good personal development book and in bed by 11 pm
3. What is your definition of personal success?
- Building a major business with a legacy, respect of colleagues, financial independence, opportunities to use your position and wealth to make a difference in the world.
- Independence, challenging and creative work, time with family and friends, a secure and consistent living, and service to the community.
4. I am more comfortable with a work environment that is ______________.
- Formal. I prefer designated spaces for employees, clear boundaries between staff and management, a conference room for meetings, a receptionist to greet guests, and a clear beginning and end to the workday.
- Informal. I prefer to multitask, moving between personal and professional obligations as they come up. I like to work in my pajamas or sweats (except when meeting clients). I prefer a workday schedule that corresponds to the needs of my family and clients, even if that means working at odd hours or occasionally on weekends.
5. What do you think your business will be like in 10 years?
- My company, its brand, and its products will be recognized as a leader regionally, nationally, or internationally, have many employees, be positioned for consistent future growth, and be constantly innovating in new directions.
- I will have a steady, not overwhelming stream of challenging work and an impressive reputation. I will make more than a comfortable living and have plenty of free time to be with family and friends.

Be sure to go back and finish watching the video. I’ll give you the key to the survey. You might be surprised.
Which did you turn out to be, Growth Maven, Lifestyle Guru or maybe a little of both?
It’s not a exact science, but I think you can see that if you don’t know this you can really get into trouble fast. Most people have mental models of success that tends toward one or the other of these.

PS – A lot of people invest themselves for years trying to build a business that ‘looks’ like the one in their mental model of success and even if they make some money, end up frustrated failures because they never stopped to decide how it REALLY needs to serve the life they want to live.
I’ve been lucky. Throughout my years in business I’ve surrounded myself with expert professional coaches and mentors who have instinctively known when I might be wandering off course or allowing my mental models to deceive me.
They have been able to offer the vital course-correcting advice and coaching that has saved me years of struggle and wasted effort as well as thousands upon thousands upon thousands of dollars.
I intend to provide you that kind of guidance here in this blog. Keep a careful watch for my next email because I’ll be delivering the next step to guaranteed success.

My business and financial success is at a very low level… anything will help, look forward to your strategy session and calendar so I may improve the adds for succeeding from here on… thanks Steve
I went through this exercise with another business coach. I’m definitely a lifestyle guru. My overhead is a little higher because I do outsource the stuff I don’t like.
Nice video. Everyone who wants to start a business ought to view this one so they don’t overextend themselves.
Definitely LIFTSTYLE GURU. Well, I live in Australia!! Guess I was already aware of this – have been thinking exactly what I wanted to do with my business – complementary health – decided I need a balance between work and social activites, friends, painting, learning piano, gardening, etc, etc. I’m only responsible for myself so finally can do exactly what I want. Quite a challenge at age 65! Need to continue earning money/having an income – for financial reasons but also mental stimulation and because I love helping other people to regain their health, discover themselves, etc. Thanks for the videos and your straight forward approach. I live in Australia too!
Dear Mr. Little,
I need to thank you for all the information provided.
Every email sent to me is read and re-read, listened and re-listened. I appreciate everything you have done up to this date. I always looking forward your next email.
I am currently in a start up stage and don’t have much to report. However, what I have learned from your emails will definitively apply toward my business.
Again, thank you so much.

No surprise there…I turned out to be a lifestyle guru, unequivocally so. The thought of offices and staff meetings sounds horribly boring, like a strait-jacket, really. As a fashion and knitwear designer and future cafe owner I value creativity and comfortable, beautiful surroundings and freedom from all kinds of formality. I don’t like to be restricted to one area of self-expression, and that’s why I plan to turn my love of creative baking and sandwich making into a really individual-looking business with great decor and music to complete the picture. Watching your videos really brings the dream closer, so THANK YOU, Steve!! Erika, Finland
Hi Steve,
Thank you for the wonderful presentations. They came at the right time for me, because I want to start my own business. With the help of your video I have realized that I like a LIfe Style Guru. Well, I knew that before also, but the problem is how to realize that? I want to publish my book and start an engraving rock business. The problem I have is, what to do first? How do I generate enough income form writing a book? How do I support my kids and myself with this life style?
Hi Steve,
I am a LifeStyle Guru. I am interesting in finding the right business, thank for the info, I am looking forward to the next lesson.
Thanks
Hello!
Thank you first of all, for these ideas. I am a Lifestyle Guru in my first steps and to became a Growth Maven at one point in my business.
GROWTH MAVEN
I chose this because I truly want to grow a major business that become national leader in its area but I hope it is not so time-consuming, 8a.m. to 4 or 5p.m. would be much better
By the way, I’ve went through several pages on business training like this and the content you bring here is definitely of a very good quality. Thanks for that.
LIFESTYLE GURU, all the way.
i’m so laid back about life, i realize i really lack a vision, and have never been ‘good’ at setting goals and achieving them. i had a business plan at one time, but it was too hard for me to stick with it. just felt like it wasn’t my style!
but something’s got to give- i deserve to realize a consistent, happy flow of money coming in, to joyfully serve others. and grow and expand in freedom and joy- to finally do all the things i daydream about doing sometimes. my heart wants all this for me!
steve, i’m really intrigued but what you’ve shared so far, and i look forward to seeing what else you have to post. i’m feeling more hopeful than i have in months! Namaste.
LIFESTYLE GURU. all the way. and i gotta say, i’ve been lacking a clear vision, and any long-term goals cuz i just feel so laid-back about life. but lately i’m coming to feel that i have to get into a different frame of mind and take some new inspired action, to increase my income and LIVE THE LIFESTYLE i think about, vaguely, so often.
steve, i am intrigued by the information you have shared thus far and look forward to future posts. i’m feeling hopeful for the first time in months.
It is very possible to do both simultaneously, my understanding is Google has a similar very relaxed life style guru environment.
Great distinction. It is easy to want one and get caught up with fantasies that would take us toward a goal that would ultimately make us unhappy.
thanks!
